Another way to think about the role of phonology in reading to think about what role it plays in learning to read. When children begin to read, they are already fairly proficient with spoken language (that is, they know the relationship between phonology and semantics for their langauge). With this in mind, why might phonology be important in learning to read, and how might its role in reading change as readers become more skilled (if it changes at all)?
